← Insurance Verification, Answered

What does the AI actually do in eligibility verification?

Three jobs, on top of the standard transaction. It interprets the 271 response, deciding which of dozens of inconsistently filled benefit lines apply to this patient and procedure. It fills the gaps the response leaves, from payer policies and coverage discovery. And, as a last resort, it calls the payer with a voice agent that navigates the IVR.

It helps to start with what the AI is not doing. It is not checking eligibility; that is a standardized transaction that has worked the same way for twenty years and costs a few cents. If a vendor's AI story is "we check eligibility automatically," they are describing the clearinghouse.

How a vendor sequences the three jobs matters more than whether it does them. A tool that interprets and fills gaps first, and calls only when nothing else answers, resolves most verifications in seconds. A tool that calls first scales its cost with every verification.
