← Insurance Verification, Answered

Does my EHR's eligibility check count as benefits verification?

Usually not. Most EHR and practice-management checks are 270/271 eligibility transactions run through a clearinghouse. They confirm active coverage and return plan-level values, but they do not apply CPT-specific rules, the provider's contract or place-of-service logic, and they rarely surface prior-authorization requirements reliably. They also do not know your fee schedule, so they cannot produce an estimate.

The EHR check is the input to benefits verification, not a substitute for it. It is worth running on every appointment because it catches inactive policies and wrong member IDs early. The work that remains after it, reading the response, finding service-level rules, confirming prior auth and applying the fee schedule, is what staff spend their time on, and what AI verification tools are built to take over.
